How Ice-Makers work

Ice makers are part of refrigerator and freezer systems.

Ice makers are part of refrigerator and freezer systems. They dispense ice cubes while they’re needed. They keep the amount you need when you need it. Ice makers (also called ice dispensers) use a timer to control an electromechanical valve called the solenoid valve. The solenoid valve uses a magnetic field to generate and control the amount of water used to make the ice.

If your ice maker isn’t making any ice, there could be several reasons. We have listed a few simple solutions that are usually the culprit of the problem. If you think something else is happening with your appliance, give us a call, and we can discuss further options.

Your ice machine should produce crystal-clear ice. Cloudy ice indicates that the water has.. impurities and could lead to a bad-tasting drink. The best way to get crystal clear ice is by using an ice maker with a built-in filtration system. Replacing the filter every six months helps keep your water supply fresh, ensuring you always have great tasting drinks.

Common Ice Maker Problems

Ice Tastes Bad.

A reason for foul-tasting ice is how long your ice has been sitting. If the ice has been in the freezer bin long enough, it will take on the smell of unwrapped food in your freezer. Tightly wrap food so the ice does not absorb odors or dump out the ice and allow for new ice.

Ice Maker Does Not Dispense Enough Ice.

When your ice maker is not making ice. A clogged or broken water inlet valve could also be malfunctioning. Some water inlet valves have pause features that can be unknowingly activated. A clogged filter or a faulty thermostat can also halt ice production.

Ice Maker Makes Too Much Ice.

If the bin below the ice maker is unbalanced, it will not communicate with the ice maker to tell it to stop producing ice. The tray sits on top of a metal paddle that can break. If the metal paddle breaks, you must replace the entire ice maker.

Ice Maker is Leaking.

Make sure the ice maker and refrigerator are perfectly balanced and level. If one is off-balance, the water supply line could become kinked or damaged, causing the ice maker to slow down or not correctly freeze the ice.

Does Not Dispense Enough Ice.

A clogged or frozen water valve can create problems and may continue to dispense some ice. If it’s not dispensing enough ice, you should expect that the valve will eventually completely freeze, preventing any ice from being dispensed.
